Body SAR - implementation in Japan

April 1st 2014

Body SAR requirements have been enforced in Japan, and updated per product or type certification are now delivered at authorized certification bodies.

The new Body SAR requirements apply to the following radio products:
1 - Mobile phone, such as WCDMA, CDMA2000, FDD-LTE terminals or repeaters
2 - Wide band wireless access systems, such as AXGP, WiMAX2+ terminals or repeaters
3 - Iridium satellite phones
4 - Thuraya satellite products
5 - Inmarsat (GPS only) products

Also, should any of the following products be grouped in the same casing to any of the above 5 categories, be able to transmit simultaneously, and the resulting average power be higher than 20mW, Body SAR requirements will also apply to them.

6 - Digital cordless phones, including DECT products
7 - PHS devices
8 - Low power radio devices, such as 2.4GHz, 5GHz WiFi devices, excluding some categories of radars.

Now, should the product be used at more than 20 cm from the body, or the average power is lower than 20mW, the Body SAR requirements do not apply.

As an example, Body SAR do not apply to a bluetooth headset.
